Probing the Confederation

A year or so after the Shuvanaljis Revolt, the Hegemony began to probe and test Confederate military readiness with ever bigger incursions.

One of these was to lay the reputation of the Confederate forces (and more notably the Black Fleet) and set the stage for future conflicts for decades to come.

Hegemonic forces were led by Admiral Mutabi. Mutabi's forces consisted of an entire Task Force with a carrier at its core.

The Confederate defense was commanded by Admiral Francois Aloisande. Aloisande's forces were meager in comparison (two incomplete arms of a task force), but were well drilled and had been veterans of previous incursions.

Mutabi bum-rushed the boarder colony of Cascadia, using two complete arms and the carrier, while utilizing the smaller elements of the two other arms in neighboring systems. Hegemonic forces quickly overwhelmed Cascadia's native defenses, and fighting in neighboring systems continued.

The response from Confederate forces was swift and intense. Aloisande sent the bulk of his forces to the neighboring systems and quickly routed the smaller elements of Mutabi. When Mutabi responded with the remaining reserve elements of his two other arms, Aloisande was ready. In a hit-and-run style battle, the destroyers and heavy cruisers of the Hegemony were all heavily damaged and forced to surrender or run home.

Upon hearing of this route, Mutabi grew increasingly impatient and short tempered, and made plans to secure the neighboring systems for the Hegemony. But when Mutabi's carrier and heavy cruisers arrived, Aloisande was ready, with several Black Fleet elements that had been holding in reserve. The heavy cruisers were destroyed, with all hands aboard lost, and the Cruiser was damaged beyond repair, and Mutabi was forced to surrender. A courier was allowed to be dispatched back, and when the remainder of the Hegemonic forces were told of the defeat, quickly ran. No ground combat on Cascadia took place, and the retreat was quickly made.

In the battle, several Grey Fleet ships were destroyed, and none would surrender or retreat, keeping in the fight even after their hulls had been badly compromised.

Black fleet forces were almost all destroyed. Mutabi had targeted them early, believing them to be the key to breaking Confederate morale. But the Black Forces (consisting of the Heavy Cruiser Constantinople and three Destroyers) held firm and were instrumental in the crippling of the Hegemonic carrier Egypt.

The account of this battle spread throughout the Hegemony like a lightning bolt, and the reputation of the Black Fleet as a premier fighting force was secured. Even now, as Hegemonic forces vastly outnumber the Confederate, it is widely feared that the Black Fleet will make any fight, far bloodier than any adversary is willing to suffer.

Naval Task Force

A force of Starships in both the Hegemony and the Republic is centered around the Task Force concept. A Task force is centered around a Ship of the Line (Carrier, Battleship, or collection of Assault Ships) and features four arms. Each Arm consists of a heavy cruiser, two or three light cruisers, and two destroyer groups. Destroyer groups consist of three Destroyers and six corvettes or gunships (or a mix of the two), as well as any fighters in their direct command.

The Hegemony currently operates nearly a dozen Task Forces.

The Confederation currently operates three Task Forces in the Grey and White Fleets, and the Black Fleet operates one.

Since the Task Force represents a massive amount of ships and firepower, they almost never assemble in a single location and instead operate spread out within a region.

From Task Forces, Task Groups are assembled and are constructed from just about any type and number of starship. Task Groups are created and disbanded upon demand.

VF-22/23 Space Supiorority OmniFighter

The Lian Confederation's smallest military starship is the VF-22/23 OmniFighter.

The OmniFighter is a multi-role, variable configuration single-seat fighter.

The VF-22/23 is capable of atmospheric operations, long distance missions (via a removable, unbalanced alter-space drive), interception, bombing missions, close air support, patrols, and a vast number more.

The fighter is powered by a single, portable class 1, fusion reactor. Thrust is via two, vectored plasma motors, and control and coordination is managed mostly by a semi-autonomous computer system, and the human pilot.

Two 9 gauge plasma rifles are hard mounted underneath the fuselage, and constitutes the minimal amount of weapons on the OmniFighter. Each wing supports two underside softpoints, and one wingtip softpoint. Each Softpoint supports a myriad of equipment, including (but not limited to) sensor pods, drones, missile pods and plasma cannons.

The VF-22/23 is capable of transiting from open space into the atmosphere unassisted but must mount two egress pods in order to transit from atmosphere to open space.

The VF-22 is used primarily in the Gray and White fleets.

The VF-23 is the Black Fleet's variant of the OmniFighter. Is supports more powerful plasma motors and a shield generator. It is typically painted black, but many squadrons operate with their ships painted in the line duty gray to disguise themselves.

Brown

Brown is a colony in the Lian Confederation, 12.7 light years from the Capitol system.

Brown orbits a main sequence star named Omega 384, and it's designation is 45910182T.

Population: 120 Million
Diameter: 10,382 Kilometers
Age: 4.25 Billion Years

Brown was discovered in 2490 and was first colonized after minimal Terra-forming in 2493.

Mostly agrarian, the colony boasts the most productive wheat fields in the confederation. Brown is also host to the Farma Prefecture, that allies most of the farming colonies in the Confederation.

Defenses are moderate in strength and Brown hosts a post-graduate war college for Naval forces.

Capitol

Capitol is the sole core world of the Lian Confederation.

The planet is technically designated 38729387B and was discovered in early 2326. Originally its common name was Lian's Colony, but it experienced a name change upon the founding of the Confederation. Colonization began in 2331, with the founding of its first community of approximately 104 persons named Rose City.

The planet is 23,745 Kilometers in diameter, and is between 4.5 and 5 billion years in age. Terra-forming took just over two years, and the efforts consisted mainly of increasing the amount of carbon dioxide, and the importing of water via local comets.

Some trees were introduced early but failed to take hold in the soil. It is hoped that within the next thirty years or so, another attempt at transplanting can be made, and that the soil will then successfully support them.

Capitol is host to most of the Confederations governmental operations. Both branches of government and just about every department are housed in the city of Garande. The city was built solely for the purpose of housing the government and it's employees, and boasts a population of about 2.5 million.

The biggest city on the colony is named Boje Valley, and harbors most of the Confederation's Corporate headquarters. It's population is around 60 Million.

Currently, the entire colony's population is just in excess of 12 billion.

Non-Aligned Worlds

The non aligned worlds are the dozen colonies left over from the Shuvanaljis Revolt, that neither wanted Hegemonic, nor Confederate rule, and who had the benefit of distance from both.

Three of the non-aligned colonies are core worlds, with significant populations and commercial activity.

Each of the non-aligned worlds are recognized as independent states, and enjoy embassies in both the Confederation and the Hegemony.

The non-aligned worlds are often havens for pirates, and other lawless entities that need access to resources without the scrutiny of a federal government. Many of the governments of these colonies have a high rate of corruption, and these worlds (with the obvious exception of the core worlds) are impoverished.

Trade with the non-aligned worlds is on a colony by colony basis, and is usually temporary. Typically these trade agreements expire when the resource is depleted, or some from of deception (real or imagined) is discovered.

Historical Overview

Within a few hundred years after humans (largely led by the efforts of the Europe and the United States) began space exploration, colonies were beginning to be established within the Solar System. First the moon (Luna) and then Mars, the colonies slowly spread outward from Earth.

After the advent of the plasma drive, access to neighboring star systems was inevitable. The first interstellar colony was to a star known as Ross 154. The colony was dispatched and took two and a half years for it to arrive. Once the colony arrived and was established (and named itself Ross Prime), it quickly grew over the next ten years to a city nearly the size of Seattle. An unknown catastrophic event occurred and most of the inhabitants of the colony were killed in 2204. The survivors were found years after the event, and with little memory of what happened. The prevailing theory of what happened is a civil war, triggered by a natural disaster (groundquake) that eliminated most of the stored resources required for the continued survival of the colonists. The conflict was so severe that the survivors were those that took on the most animal and basic of instinct. The found survivors could barley remember speech and civilized conduct.

Another colony was formed some two years after the Ross Prime incident (with the lessons learned of Ross Prime) on Lacaille 9352 (informally called just LaSalle by it's inhabitants). This is considered the first successful human colony.

Soon other colonies began to form, and with the advent of faster plasma drives, the distances became larger. One in four colonies succeeded during the next fifty years, and very soon it became clear that an inter-colony government was needed. This government took the form of a legislative body called the Human Republic. For the next 150 years, the Republic governed with a light hand, and acted as a sort of mentor to the colonies, rather than a father.

The Human Republic finally proved insufficient when a very large corporation, known as Shuvanaljis Drives LTD, developed the means to travel between star systems in the space of days (rather than the months and years it took before). The Human Republic made an attempt to seize the technology, known as an alter-space drive. But lacked sufficient resources to successfully do so. When Shuvanaljis defended their interests with force it was known as the Shuvanaljis Revolt. Most of the Republic's forces were destroyed, and it's members arrested. Afterward, Shuvanaljis assumed the mantle of power over most of the human race and its colonies (with the obvious exception of the Confederation and the non-aligned worlds).
